The Ig Nobel award ceremony was on Oct. 2. Check out their home page. There was some truly useful (insert tongue firmly in cheek) research done on things like the effect of armadillos on an archaeological dig, cat flea vs dog flea jumping heights, and a mathematical theorem on why things that can knot will knot. Oh yes, and that Coke is an effective spermicide.

Today is my Dad's birthday. I will now reminisce on a story my father once told me:

Seriously now Dad...not in this universe. Unless the school was on the other side of a really deep ravine that you had to climb down and up to get to school then down and up to get back. Then of course I could tell you it was downhill both ways too. :-)

If you thought the spherical cow was funny...

"There's no place like 127.0.0.0"

Okay not so much funny as a glancing reference to The Wizard of Oz and the reserved loopback IP address ("home").

So I woke up this morning thinking about that old physics joke about a spherical cow and realized I had remembered the punchline but forgot the joke. So I went to the almighty Google (TM) and did a search. Here is the joke as shamelessly copied from Future Positive:

A physicist, an engineer, and a psychologist are called in as consultants to a dairy farm whose production has been below par. Each is given time to inspect the details of the operation before making a report.

The first to be called is the engineer, who states: “The size of the stalls for the cattle should be decreased. Efficiency could be improved if the cows were more closely packed, with a net allotment of 275 cubic feet per cow. Also, the diameter of the milking tubes should be increased by 4 percent to allow for a greater average flow rate during the milking periods”.

The next to report is the psychologist, who proposes: “The inside of the barn should be painted green. This is a more mellow color [sp] than brown and should help induce greater milk flow. Also, more trees should be planted in the fields to add diversity to the scenery for the cattle during grazing, to reduce boredom”.

Finally, the physicist is called upon. He asks for a blackboard and then draws a circle. He begins: “Assume the cow is a sphere....”.

Believe it or not we engineers DO have a social conscience. Check out the Engineers Without Borders website.

Today (or possibly yesterday) is (was) Sir John A. MacDonald's birthday. We know he's having a drink today (and probably everyday given his reputation) so cheers Sir John. Here's some info on him from the CBC archives.

There is a cool Canadian history game that CBC just reported on. I might even consider buying this video game because it is so cool. You too can change the course of Canadian history, imagine being a Mi'kmaq and taking over Atlantic Canada. Imagine that Ipperwash or the Oka Crisis never happened because as as an English politician you decided to return the lands to the natives. Imagine that you are Laura Secord and that you could start your career as a chocolatier without having to crawl through the mud...ha ha! The possibilities are endless.
